Observations from the Yankees’ spring training game on Tuesday.
The Yankees brought in plenty of competition to provide some left-handed power off the bench, from Jay Bruce to Derek Dietrich. Mike Ford reminded everyone that his bat is pretty good, as well, with a two-RBI double to right in the Yankees 4-2 win over the Orioles in Sarasota.
If their roster is any indication, it’s going to be another long season in Baltimore, with the Orioles almost certain to finish in last place in the AL East.
Caught my eye
The Yankees knocked out Baltimore starter John Means in the top of the first, but the lefty returned to start the second, thanks to a new rule — only for spring training — that allows teams to remove a pitcher one inning and bring him in again the following inning to monitor pitch counts.
In addition to Corey Kluber’s Yankees debut, Giancarlo Stanton and Brett Gardner will also make their first appearances of the spring against the Blue Jays at 6:35 p.m. at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
